Encanto is probably the best movie that Disney has released in a LOOOOONNNNGGG time. Encanto is a family- friendly movie, that’s not only entertaining, but also very inspiring, without the sappy Disney movie cringe that a lot of these kinds of movies have…Anyways, just to try something new, I decided to do this post in a Q&A style, so that it’s easier to read and little more interesting!

Q: Is the movie cliché?

A: NOT AT ALL- When I saw the trailer, I have to say, I wasn’t exactly interested in the movie…It seemed like another basic Disney movie, with basic characters, with a basic plot, and a basic lesson. I can tell you for a fact, that I was DEFINITELY mistaken. This movie was NOT cliche, (maybe with the exception of the main character, Mirabel) rather, I felt like it was quite the opposite. ‘

Q: Who were the characters? Which one was your favorite? Least favorite?

A: There are A LOT of characters. This story is about a large family, in which each memeber has a special magical ability, except for one person, Mirabel. That’s basically the entire plot of the film, Mirabell trying to figure out why she didn’t get a gift. The family tree below should explain the characters pretty well, but I’ll give a quick recap too. Alma and Pedro Madrigal get married and have three kids, many years ago. Pedro Madrigal dies, and Alma, or Abuela to Mirabel, is left alone with three babies. She is suddenly gifted with a magical house that listens to everything that she says. Her three children are Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno Madrigal. Pepa gets married to Felix Madrigal, and their kids are Dolores, Antonio, and Camillo Madrigal. Julieta is married to Augustin Madrigal, and their kids are Mirabel, Isabela, and Luisa Madrigal. Bruno does not get married. I think that my favorite character would have to be Dolores, because I love her voice in the songs, as well as her bubbly personality. I didn’t have a specific least favorite character, but if I had to choose it would probably be Mirabel. Just like any other main character, there are SO many times where you’re trying to stop her pointlessly through the screen, and she obviously doesn’t listen, and then something bad happens. Other than that, all the characters were great, and very intricately chosen.

Disney's Encanto Embraces The Complexity Of Family

Q: What’s the plot?

A: Here’s a summary- Every single person in the Madrigal family has a special ability. One has incredible strength, while another can hear things from miles away, one has endless perfection, and one can shapeshift, etc. All but Mirabel. Mirabel starts off her quest when the magic house, Casita, starts cracking. She tries to alert the other family members, but no one listens. She begins to try and dig out information about why the house is falling apart, and eventually, comes face to face with a prophecy about her, created by none other than the family member, Bruno, who is missing. Turns out, he’s just living in the walls of the house, and is hiding, because he knows that Mirabel can either save the house from falling apart, or she candestroy it. He hides to protect her. Mirabel meets Bruno secretly, and finds tasks that she must do to save the house. She completes them, and saves the house, without any special abilities!

Q: What’s the deal about the music?

A: There was so much talk about Encanto’s music before the movie itself came out, so did it live up to those expectations? Absolutely! I think that the music couldn’t have been made by a better person, Lin Manuel Miranda, and the songs were SO catchy. My favorite is ‘We don’t Talk About Bruno’!

Q: Final Thoughts?

A: I thought that this movie was fun, engaging, absolutely not cliche, different, and exciting. The movie didn’t have us bored for a single second, and the ending was great too! 10/10, definitely reccomend!
